The Orthodox Community of Saint Ninian
![]()
We are a small group of Orthodox within the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain who, by kind permission of Bishop Hugh and Fr Ambrose, worship in the Catholic Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa in the Parish Rooms of St Margaret's Church, Lerwick.

We are led by an Orthodox nun, Mother Mary, and occasionally worship in her hermitage chapel in Unst which is dedicated to St Sunniva.

Although Saint Ninian never visited Shetland, he has been venerated in several churches here, most notably in the medieval church on Saint Ninian's Isle which traditionally is called 'The Mother Church of Shetland'.
Father John Behr, the well known theologian and parish priest in Aberdeen, is Orthodox priest for Shetland and visits to celebrate the Liturgy when his busy schedule and our changeable weather permit.
Meanwhile everyone is welcome to join us for a range of services; the Typika, Hours, Vespers, Akathist Hymn, Jesus Prayer (and Matins in the near future). This is followed by a 'cuppa' and sometimes a festive meal. We look forward to meeting you!

Saturday 30th August 11 a.m. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated in Saint Margaret's Church followed by a bring and share lunch in the Parish Room. Archimandrite Antonios Kakalis of Edinburgh came up specially for the occasion.
